Advent day 8 - singing stones

Luke 19 : 40 “I tell you,” He replied, “if they keep quiet, the stones will cry out.”

I love this verse.  I know its not a verse primarily about stones.  And yet it is about stones . It tells me that there is a whole other layer of stuff going on in our world about which we are largely unaware.  The Bible is full of references to nature having a 'voice'.  The trees of the field will clap their hands.  The stars sing. The stones cry out.  It all sounds like poetic metaphor, but actually, the more science evolves the more we are discovering that indeed all things do make sounds.  Stars really do sing. Google it. Its fascinating. When Jesus spoke these words nobody knew whales communiate across oceans and dolphins talk to each other in clicks.

Humans can only hear a limited range of sounds: those with frequencies between about 20 hertz (low sounds like thunder) and 20 kilohertz (very high sounds like some species of bats). Other sounds exist outside the scope of our auditory capacities.

“Infrasonic” sounds such as the rumble of earthquakes have frequencies too low for us to perceive, although other animals can detect them. There are “ultrasonic” sounds too, with frequencies above the threshold of human hearing.  (Stephen Khan The Conversation UK)

All of the sound that creation is making is praise to the Lord. Because He has made everything to be dynamic; even apparently intert things like rocks are made of molecules which are in a constant dance of praise. The whole of creation not only displays the awesome creativity of God, but is imbued with His very essence. He created it all by speaking His word. Let there be....... and His word is living and active. God's DNA burst forth from Him as He uttered that first word and went forth to create everything and is still creating and sustaining everything to this day. Mind bending.

The Bible verse Psalm 148:1-14 describes how all of creation praises God, including:
  • The heavens: "Shout the LORD's praises in the highest heavens"
  • The sun, moon, and stars: "Praise him, sun and moon; praise him, all you shining stars!"
  • The earth: "Let the earth praise the Lord"
  • The waters: "Praise him, you highest heavens, and you waters above the heavens!"
  • Animals: "All wild and tame animals, all reptiles and birds, come praise the LORD!"
  • People: "Every king and every ruler, all nations on earth, every man and every woman, young people and old, come praise the LORD!"
All of this puts a new perspective on our guardianship of the planet.  Im not advocating an animistic /Buddhist
worldview, but theres definitely something we have missed as the people of God over recent years.
I have a notion that when we get to heaven we will be able to understand the languages the animal speak and be able to hear the stones and the trees praising. All of creation together will somehow join in a crescendo of worship beyond imagining.  Can't wait.
